New optogenetic tool inhibits activity in neurons and heart muscle cells

Researchers developed a new optogenetic tool that uses blue light to selectively reduce activity in neurons and human heart muscle cells. The approach couples the light-sensitive receptor Opn4L with a modified GIRK1 potassium channel to control inhibitory G-protein signaling more precisely.
