Atomic magnetism reveals why iron, but not chromium, can produce ammonia using sunlight

Researchers found that nearly identical metal–organic framework catalysts behave differently because of atomic magnetism: iron-based nodes can use light to help convert nitrogen into ammonia, while chromium-based nodes cannot. The key difference is how each metal’s spin interactions affect nitrogen binding and release.
